該項總決賽是每年國際乒聯巡回賽的“壓軸戲”。根據規定，球員除巡回賽積分榜排前16位，單打選手還要參加滿五站比賽，雙打選手還要與同一個搭檔參加滿四站比賽，方可以領到參賽“門票”。這也是中國的倫敦奧運會冠軍張繼科、馬龍、李曉霞、郭躍無緣參賽的原因。
